Position Objectives

The Certified Medical Assistant/Receptionist is responsible for the intake of the patient into the clinic and entry of health care information into the electronic health records system as well as collecting co-pays and appropriate payments for service. Works closely with the office manager, nurse, and nurse practitioner to provide friendly, flexible service to patients and their families. Assists the nurse practitioner in preparing patients for examination, vital sign readings, and current medications. Answers the phone, makes appointments, and manages paperwork pertinent to the success of the clinic. Works in a holistic, patient care-centered environment.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Prepares and maintains complete and accurate charts, case files, records and other documents using an electronic health records system and checks for completeness and accuracy.
  2. Assists the nurse practitioner in preparing patients for screening and diagnostic tests, including blood draws, cultures, skin tests, pap smears, and other procedures appropriate for patient’s condition.
  3. Attends, participates in, and contributes to in-services education and staff training sessions to maintain and increase skills, and to teach others.
  4. Actively is involved in the community and surrounding community events working with the office manager, nurse, and nurse practitioner in preparing educational material for promoting and educating patients, families, and communities about health care issues.
  5. Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Controls

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the medical office manager, nurse, or the nurse practitioner in the clinic. This position requires patience, integrity, and willingness to work with patients and staff in order to provide a friendly, patient-centered environment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations as a certified medical assistant and performs duties within their scope of practice as applicable within specific licensure.
  • Knowledge of standard medical record-keeping and HIPAA requirements.
  • Knowledge of community resources for medical care, mental health care and social services.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients from various social, cultural, and economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other medical care providers.
  • Ability to recognize and take immediate action in emergency and immediate need medical cases within their scope of practice and licensure.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality.

Qualifications, Experience, Education

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Certified Medical Assistant license, REQUIRED.
  • Must possess a Certified Medication Aide license, REQUIRED. (Must have Medication Aide license to provide injections or give medications as ordered by provider).
  • Basic Life Support certification, REQUIRED.
  • Must submit to and clear a Criminal Background check.
  • Must submit to and clear an Alcohol/Drug Screen.
  • 1 year experience working in a clinic setting is recommended, but will train new graduates.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Computer literacy and typing proficiency minimum 60 words-per-minute required.
  • Experience with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required.
  • Some experience with an Electronic Health Records system is required. CPFM utilizes Athena EHR.
  • Flexible work schedule with some evening and weekends hours.
